Five Frugal Things We’ve Done This Week – 15/09/17

In this week's 5 frugal things I've done a bit of sewing and a bit of looking after myself - on the cheap!

Five frugal things we’ve done this week:

Second week back at school and we’re truly back into the swing of things! School bus fares have gone up 10% though, which is kinda annoying. So of course, we’ve got to be cost-conscious in other areas; here’s what we’ve been up to.

Making a batch of homemade deodorant

This has been long overdue! I guess when you make it yourself you just think, yeah yeah, I’ll get around to it. Actually, it’s the easiest recipe ever to make, but I just forgot the coconut oil the last time I was at the supermarket and it took us to the brink of scraping the container of the last batch.

Fancy making some yourself? Find the recipe here!

Whipping up a fresh batch of homemade hair cream

Seeing as I had a new stock of coconut oil, I also made my own afro hair cream. One of my workmates brought in a bag of shea butter for me (as she had a big block at home) and I used it alongside the coconut oil and some of the Holland & Barret aloe juice I’d frozen in cubes.

You can find that recipe here!

Even better, I also learned how to do 3-strand twists on my hair. I’m so lazy when it comes to my hair that everything that makes the maximum amount of impact for the minimum effort appeals to me.

Mop refill pads reduced to clear

Cleaning up after five cats is insane. On a trip to get some cat litter, Lord Balders came across replacement mop heads for our foam mop, and as they were reduced to clear, he bought the lot.

At least now we can mop up after them ad infinitum.

Sewing up some ripped trousers

Talk about making do and mending – my husband managed to rend his trousers in half along the bum, and in such a way as to make a repair very unlikely. As it wasn’t along the seam I didn’t think it was worth trying, but he didn’t care.

After a few minutes on the machine, I made his trousers usable again.

Ok, so they’re not going to be reserved for going anywhere nice, but they’ll still do a job.

Smart social media scheduling

As I’ve been getting busier with the blog I’ve been looking for the best tools to invest in to make my job easier.

Being frugal with money is only half of it; I need to look after my time better. You can always make more money, but time? You’ve only got so much. Still, it’s not as though I have tons of money to throw around, so I like to get good value for my cash.

After trying out a few platforms I’ve settled on Recurpost, which is great for me because I can keep my evergreen updates in a kind of library that can be reused. It’ll save me so much time, and the best bit is that it also has a free plan!

I’m convinced that I’m going to pay to upgrade though, as it is well worth it for me.

Over to you…

Done anything frugal this week? I’d love to hear about it!

    1. Sea salt deodorant sounds very interesting, I’m going to have to look that up! I wonder if it can cope with my husband’s workouts? That’s the toughest test any deodorant can go through! 😀
