This fortnight has brought us a half-term holiday as well. The half-term week can be an expensive one, but Little Balders is away visiting family for the week so we’re only having to entertain ourselves. So we’ve been entertaining ourselves by planning all the home improvements that are due to be started this year – yes, there’ll be some expense, but it’ll be worth it!
Here’s what we’ve been up to during our thrifty two weeks:
Using Tesco’s 5p off per litre offer
When we spent over £50 at the supermarket we got an offer of 5p off per litre of fuel. It’s an on-off offer that pops up every now and then, and it is worth it if you’re shopping at Tesco anyway. We cut £1.25 off our next petrol top-up and got another during a second weekly shop, which saved us £1.30.
eBaying like crazy
Ste got an offer to get £10 back from eBay if he sold something for £10. After putting it off for ages, he’s been on a roll yet again.
He’s made quite a few sales and brought in a decent bit of cash, even before thinking about the eBay cashback offer. Pretty good getting that incentive!
Using Parcelforce for delivery
Going via TopCashback to Parcelforce for delivery gave us money back on the price of sending our eBay packages, plus we were able to use a discount code and drop off at the local post office.
Shopping around for delivery options has definitely saved us money over going straight to the post office.
Cut-price cat food
Now that we know that cat food is a ridiculously big chunk of our supermarket spending, we jumped at the chance to nab some reduced cat food at the supermarket.
It’s sometimes just a matter of packaging being a bit battered or a few pouches being missing from a box, but none of that affects the quality, and on the upside, the cats love a bit of variety.
Well, except for Mohawk – she’s the strangest cat I’ve ever had. She doesn’t want to eat anything but the Lidl/Aldi trays of food, whereas the other two would have anything, and think that human’s food is the best food of all!
Sticking to the grocery budget
Only a milk and bread top up mid week, for fear of running over the food budget… we have to pull in some savings if we’re going to make a significant dent in the grocery spending. I actually put down a bottle of wine yesterday with the words “the budget” falling from my lips!
Now, we don’t intend to be munching on cardboard from here on out, but we do need to make some savings, and you better believe we’re giving it our best.
Over to you…
Have you found any ways to have a frugal week?
I’m linking up with Cass, Emma and Becky in this week’s ‘Five Frugal things I’ve done this week’ linky.
